5. Routes & Logistics

The following list contains several suggested field trips, grouped to the different topics of the Västervik area. One can either chose from these trips or plan trips with the locations in individual order. Each field trip is prepared to be capable in one day. If time permits more locations can be added as desired.

As a central place to start all trips the first choice is Västervik’s Campsite at Lysingbadet. It is just a few kilometers to central Västervik and at Lysingsbadet one can chose to stay in a tent, trailer, youth hostel, cottage or at the family hotel Skärgården.

Contact Lysingsbadet at:
Lysingsbadet, Strömsholmen, SE-593 30 Västervik, Sweden
Telephone 0046 490 88 920 Fax 0046 490 88 945
E-post: lysingsbadet@vastervik.se

More information about Västervik and Lysingbadet can also be found on the internet at:

Field trips

The Excursion localities are arranged according to topic of studies and location numbers:

1) Rocks of the Västervik Formation
Location 03 - Mylonites at Bjursund’s Campsite
Location 05 - Quartzites of the Västervik Formation
Location 10 - Metasedimentary xenoliths within a granite at Badplats Gunnebo
Location 18 - Flecky gneisses and premetamorphic ductile shear zone at Skälö
Location 19 - Migmatites at Badplats Blankaholm

2) Granitoids of the Västervik area
Location 06 - Sedimentary dike in a granodiorite of the Loftahammar granitoids
Location 08 - Mingling of a granodiorite and a gabbro
Location 09 - Synmagmatic mafic veins within a granodiorite
Location 10 - Metasedimentary xenoliths within a granite
Location 13 - Ductile shear zone / mylonite within granitoids
Location 14 - Edelhammar granites
Location 15 - Mingling of two granite varieties
Location 20 - Anorogenic granite of the Götemar massif

This field trip may be parted in two smaller trips.

3) Acid and basic volcanics
Location 12 - metarhyolite at lake Långsjön
Location 17 - basic flows within the Västervik Formation at Skälö
Location 18 - Flecky gneisses and premetamorphic ductile shear zone at Skälö

4) Sedimentary dikes, veins and eskers
Location 06 - Sedimentary dike in a granodiorite of the Loftahammar granitoids
Location 07 - Esker south of Västervik
Location 11 - Pegmatite dike
Location 16 - Sedimentary dike in a granite

5) The “mingling phenomenon”
Location 06 - Sedimentary dike in a granodiorite of the Loftahammar granitoids
(The wall opposite site of the road)
Location 08 - Mingling of a granodiorite and a gabbro
Location 09 - Synmagmatic mafic veins within a granodiorite
Location 15 - Mingling of two granite varieties

6) Ductile deformation and mylonitization (related to the LLDZ)
Location 01 - Veined amphibolitc gneisses N’ of Edsbruck
Location 02 - Veined gneisses N’ of Edsbruck
Location 03 - Mylonites at Bjursund’s Campsite
Location 04 - Blastomylonites at Hallmare
(Location 18 - Flecky gneisses and premetamorphic ductile shear zone at Skälö)
(Location 13 - Ductile shear zone / mylonites at Långsjön)

Location 18 is somewhat apart from the LLDZ and only slightly affected with a small scaled shear zone. Add this location as time permits.

Location 13 is not related to the formation of the LLDZ but an excellent outcrop to examine how mylonitization affects the surrounding rocks. Add this location as time permits.
